Freunde in Oxford verbracht.
Mai 1929 in Hamburg geborene Ralf Gustav
Dahrendorf engagierte sich schon früh politisch. 1944 wurde er von den
nationalsozialistischen Behörden wegen Beteiligung an einer illegalen
Schülervereinigung im Lager Schwetig/Oder (heute das polnische Swiecko)
inhaftiert.
Anschließend, an der London School of Economics and Political Science,

Ralf
Dahrendorf
Born in Hamburg on the 1st of May, 1929, the thinker, politician and professor of sociology Ralf
Gustav Dahrendorf was invested by Queen Elizabeth as Baron of Clare Market in
the City of Westminster in 1993. He thus became a hereditary peer with a seat in
the Upper House of the British parliament. His CV is too long even to summarise
properly here, but these are the main points:
Having earned his doctorate with a dissertation on the "Begriff des
Gerechten im Denken von Karl Marx" (The concept of justice in the thought
of Karl Marx), he was awarded another PhD by the London School of Economics with
his work "Unskilled Labour in British Industry" five years later. He
then served as Professor of Sociology at Hamburg, Columbia University and Tübingen
before moving in 1966 to the new University of Constance where he taught - with
some protracted breaks - until 1986.
After a brief membership of the SPD (until 1952), he stood as a councillor for
the Freie Demokratische Partei in Tübingen and in 1967 was elected to Baden-Württemberg's
parliament. Following his appointment to the party's national committee he took
the post of Parliamentary Secretary of State under Foreign Minister Scheel. In
1969 Dahrendorf became a member of the German parliament, but in 1970 he
switched to the European Commission where he was responsible first for foreign
trade and the EEC's external relations, and subsequently for education, research
and science.
In 1974 Ralf Dahrendorf was appointed Director of the London School of
Economics, a position he held for ten years. From 1987 to 1997 he was Warden of
St. Anthony's College, Oxford. In Great Britain he joined David Steel's
Social Liberals in the late eighties.
Lord Dahrendorf's bibliography includes significant works of sociology and
political science, as well as history: Class and Class Conflict in Industrial
Society (1959); Gesellschaft und Freiheit - Zur soziologischen Analyse der
Gegenwart (1961); Gesellschaft und Demokratie in Deutschland (1965); Pfade aus
Utopia (1967); Essay in the Theory of Society (1968); Konflikt und Freiheit
(1972); Plädoyer für die Europäische Union (1973); Die neue Freiheit - Über
Leben und Gerechtigkeit in einer veränderten Welt (1975); On Britain (1982);
Die Chancen der Krise (1983); Law and Order (1985); Domestic Change and Foreign
Policy (1986); Fragmente eines neuen Liberalismus (1987); Reflexions on the
Revolution in Europe (1990); Der moderne soziale Konflikt (1992); Liberals and
Others. Portraits (1994); Europäisches Tagebuch (1995); After 1989: Morals,
Revolution and Civil Society (1997).
Lord Dahrendorf is currently working on a book about the problems of the
"third Way".
